What does an abnormal Pap smear mean?
An abnormal Pap smear means some cervical cells look different from normal — it rarely means cancer, but it needs follow-up.
An abnormal result usually means minor cell changes, often caused by HPV, that may resolve on their own or need monitoring.
It does not mean you have cancer. Most abnormal results are early, treatable changes found exactly when screening is meant to find them.
Depending on the result, your doctor may repeat the test, add an HPV test, or recommend a colposcopy for a closer look.
